Club History

Our historians are currently researching this page - please bare with us !

In the meantime here is what I know of the history, a very condensed version :

  • Founded in 1952, following a meeting in the Sportsman Pub, Seasalter.
  • Has always been an active Catamaran sailing club, with, in the '60s, a fairly large fleet of Shearwaters. These days the Dart 18 and Dart 15 classes form the bulk of the clubs fleet. Although there have been quite a few members who have sailed dinghies through the years.
  • In the mid-late seventies the club members built the current clubhouse replacing the original shed that severed as the clubhouse. The was with the aid of a grant from the Sports Council.
  • Former club members David Williams and Ian Rhodes were selected for the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games sailing in the Tornado class. After the 1996 games Ian gave a talk about his experiences which was very informative and gave a good insight what life is like in the 'Sailing Elite'. For the rest of us 'mere mortals' we can but dream !.
  • 2002 the club received a Lottery grant to fund the purchase of a new Training Rib for help in the club's race training and powerboat training events.
