the race was enjoyed by all, even those who weren't racing had lots of fun!

The bank holiday Sunday brought out some of our "free sailing" enthusiasts.  These are relatively new members who are getting used to their boats, and we hope will soon be drawn in to the excitement of racing!!  We had a Hellcat, similar to a Hobbie with Alan White, who having sailed it backwards decided that it went much better with a jib!!  Paul and his brother Carter were on Dart 18 4871, doing very well and beginning to follow the fleet, watch out for this boat, it could do very well, it has "history", of Nationals under ownership by Eric Sales!  2 dinghies, the Wanderer with Erik Puce and the Piker, sailed by Laurence and Christina were seen having exciting sailing during the afternoon.  Lynn Reynolds took her Laser out and capsized, but didn't mind as the sea was not toooo cold!!

Race 2

Weather: NE 25-30mph Wind, Sea State: Rough, Air: Sunny, 25o

Wow what a day! lots of drama. Only 4 people ventured out despite a number of people turning up and then not liking the conditions. The 4 were Martin Searle, Jeff Kiddle, Kevin Dutch and novice sailor David Stafford all sailing Sprint 15's in Una Rig mode except David who sailed Chris's boat in Sport mode.

During the pre-start whilst I was getting to grips with how to tack in the 7ft seas there was a collision between Kevin and David which saw Kevin's boat being holed in its starboard hull near the main beam, low down near the keel. I had a short while earlier passed Kevin who was sitting on a port tack close hauled but I was too busy tacking too see the actual collision just saw Kevin desperately fending off David's boat and then high tailing it for the shore. David followed suit shortly afterwards. Kevin hadn't changed his position from last time I saw him so I assume that David didn't see him, and tacked into him.

Whilst all this was going on the race started, I'd not got a proper timing and thus started way behind Jeff who had made a pretty decent start! The beat was by far the most painful feature of what had now turned into a match race between Martin and Jeff, with both having to hike out hard for long periods of time, my poor dodgy back was feeling even more dodgy afterwards I can tell you. The first beat saw Jeff fluffing his first tack which allowed me to make up some distance on him, miracles of miracles I found a lovely flat spot in the wave pattern and tacked without too much drama.

After rounding the Windward mark it was onto a nail biting reach, I'd been playing around with rig setup earlier in the week, and lets just say it was a bit too loose so the mast would fall backwards and then fall forwards with each wave, so I opted not too push the limit too far. Jeff meanwhile pushed the throttles to their stops and zoomed off. Rounding the windward mark it was Jeff about 300yds in the lead and he proceeded to set a slight broad reach and maximised his speed. I opted for a deeper broad reach which allowed him to start the close the gap. I choose to tack rather than gybe (see the loop near the top of the course picture below), bad decision but I wasn't too sure about the rig staying upright! after a couple of false starts I got it round and set off for the mark. Jeff had made his Gybe and was sailing very fast towards the mark but had more distance too cover.

At the downwind mark it was Jeff now only 150yds in front of me. During the next beat Jeff found he was unable to point as high as I could so he was forced to tack early for the mark (or run into the beach!) which allowed Me to take the lead at the eight knot buoy and despite Jeff's best efforts including some hair raising moments coming off the reach he was never able to match my boat for pointing and my single tack beats killed Jeff's challenge there and then. I also had decided to gybe for the remaining 3 laps after loosing way too much time tacking in the first lap.

We both had some moments to treasure mine was having both bows out of the water in mid air whilst surfing off the top of a 7ft high wave, nice Jacuzzi in the trampoline! I was swamped numerous times by breaking waves. FUN!

You'll find a picture of the course I sailed during the race below, this was recorded by my GPS unit and at one point it recorded a maximum speed of 15knots or 18 mph, which wasn't bad. We sailed just over 12km or about 7miles.

Kevin's boat was rapidly disassembled on the beach and was hoisted over the seawall by club members and was then rushed off to Peter Barnard for some boat repairs.

Race 3

Wind: 4-5        Temp: 25oC     Sunny And Gusty

This Race was full of excitement, With the ability of doing a lap every 7 Minutes The Cats Did 5 Laps.

About Halfway though the race Bob Walker and Derek Bluer capsized Bob's Dart 18,  This was a pain for Bob as he was catching Kevin on in his Sprint 15. However they managed to get it back upright very quickly and on there own.

Towards the end of the race Steve And Jess Soby Capsized there Dart 18 However from the safety boat you could see that the main Sail had ripped, As they righted it the first time It Capsized back onto itself therefore throwing both crew members away from the Boat and ripping the sail even more.

He managed to pick up Steve and put him back onto the boat while Jess Swam back to the boat. The second time it was righted it stayed upright and they managed to get back on. By the time they had lowered the sails the race had finished and all the other boats were on the beach.
