There was one gallant dinghy sailor, guess who, Ben Saunders! in his Laser with full sail. He had a brilliant sail, being shouted at by the flock of cat sailors, didn't put him off one bit, well done for finishing! There was a close start with all cats leaving the beach on port tack, apart from Joan & Steve who thought that a starboard start would give them an advantage. However this was not to be, as the 3 Sprint 15 sailors, Kevin and John Dutch, and John Holmes took advantage of their better pointing ability and gave the 5 Dart 18's, namely Joan & Steve 6441, Bob and Bill 6876, Chris and sonny Dave 6613, Steve London and a junior (new to cat sailing) and, Sarah and Derek 1305 close competition at the Sportsman's pole. The reach out to the next mark was awesome, with much bow burying, the 18's could not shake off Kevin, who was slowed down for about 10 seconds while he submarined the boat in the water, and trawled himself windward of his boat, still hooked in. The 18's then took off and had close sailing between themselves, Chris & Dave leading for most of the time, finishing first on the water. However, as we thought the intrepid Kev beat the 18's on handicap. Chris 2nd, John D 3rd, and John Holmes 4th then the rest of the 18's. Derek's D18, Whiskers was on it's 1st sail this year and was carrying some "greenery" from it's life in the field for the last year, he has promised to wash it soon...... watch this space!!! Sarah capsized it for him but this still didnt clean it off!! Joan "teabagged" Steve, her loyal crew when caught by a gust and let go of the mainsheet entirely!! By Joan Willis |
